Seventeen minutes from Ovation at Park Crest is a hidden gem known as the Gulf Branch Nature Center & Park.
Nestled in the Gulf Branch stream valley, the center is located inside a 1920s fieldstone and quartz bungalow. It’s one of the neighborhood’s few remaining houses from that era and the center states that the building is a good example of the Craftsman bungalow style that characterized many inner-ring suburbs of Arlington during this time period.
Established in 1966, the center was the first facility in Arlington County dedicated to the study and conservation of nature. Visitors can enjoy an array of activities such as:
Spring Equinox March (March 20)
At 10:00 a.m., set out on a two-mile loop hike where you will discover a variety of blossoming flowers. Be sure to wear suitable shoes as this adventure will take you through a few creek crossings and over rough terrain.
Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup (April 8)
According to the center, the Potomac River provides 480 million gallons of drinking water to the DC metro area. Participants of the 26th annual cleanup will improve Arlington’s part of the Potomac by removing the trash in and around the water.
Birding Arlington (April 22)
Birding Arlington is a fun way to spend a morning as you’ll spot a variety of bird species that call the area home. Birders of all experience levels can participate and the knowledgeable guide will gladly answer questions along the way.
Star Gazing 101 (April 26)
Have you ever wondered what you’re looking at in the night sky? If so, Star Gazing 101 will teach you how to identify basic spring constellations and how to make a star finder.
